ASB Get Wise Lesson

What did we learn from the Get Wise Lessons?

We learned about:
- the difference between the EFTPOS card and the credit card (An EFTPOS card has your money, the credit card has the bank's money).
- doing chores to earn money
- STOP THE WHEELS, LOOK FOR GOOD DEALS (save money on specials).
- spending some money but saving some too.

Hip Hop Off

To show the skills we had learned from Jess for hip hop, we had a hip hop off afternoon where a group of students from all the classes showed off their skills.

Rayshaw, Sefo, Lolo, Sapapalii, Grace, Mya and Helen represented our class.

We have some talented dancers at our school!

Ruapotaka Powhiri

Powhiri is a process of welcoming visitors to the marae.  We had a powhiri at our school where the students and the prefects were the host and the teachers were the visitors.

The prefects talked about our school values, Mr Reid spoke for the visitors and then we did the hongi.  It was a great way to end our Maori Culture inquiry learning unit.

How to Bend Water?

How can we bend water without using magic?  In room 6, we did it, we bent running water!

First, we blew up a balloon and put it very close to the running water but nothing happened!  Then the magic started to happen ( not really a magic),when we rubbed the balloon on our hair which made it static!  It raised our hair and and stuck to Juniah's hair!  We then took our charged balloon back to the running water, the water bent, just like magic!

Kids Safe with Dogs

Keira, Kai and their owner Laura visited us at our school.  Keira and Kai came to teach us how to act around dogs, especially the ones we don't know.

Rules to keep safe from a dog:

1. Always ask the owner first if you want to pat the dog.
2. Touch the dog on its back, not the head.
3. Stand like a tree- if the dog runs up to you, stop and stay still, wrap your branches (hold your elbows), keep quiet and stare at your roots (look at the floor).

If a dog is a working dog; like a blind dog or a police dog, don't touch them!!

Keep dog safe.

Show and Tell

As part of our oral language, we have been bringing something to talk about or have thought of an interesting topic we could speak on.

We have seen fluffy toys, dolls, snow globes and heard about birthday parties.  The audience had to listen carefully to the speakers so they could ask questions.

Matariki Celebration

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of 7 stars. It rises in mid-winter and is the start of the Maori new year. This year to celebrate Matariki, we made and flew kites, we practised using poi and we made matariki stars and lanterns.

Flying the kite (manu tukutuku) was one of our favourite activities.

Corn Flour Gloop

Did you know that corn flour gloop looks hard but when you pick it up, it seems to 'melt' and drips from your fingers.  We found that out during this science experiment.  We tried to form it into a ball and as soon as we stopped rolling, it went flat and started to drip!

Hip Hop with Jess

Jess, our hip hop teacher has been teaching us some hip hop moves and gave us the chance to show some of the skills we have learned.  We had to make up a dance routine in our groups to demonstrate to the class.

Buddy Reading with Room 12

This term we were lucky to go to Room 12 for our buddy reading.  We looked at their work on the chrome book and read some of their blogs.

Thank you room 12 for having us!

Inside the Sensory Bag

We have been learning to write descriptions and we have been trying to use our sense of sight, touch, feel, hear and taste while doing this.

Today was a bit tricky because we had to use our sense of touch only to describe the object in the sensory bag.  We were a bit worried about what might be in the bag but Mrs Raj said it was safe to touch.

We put our hand inside the bag and felt around.  It was a bit strange as we couldn't see what it was.  We then had to write our descriptions.

Kiana's Description

Inside the Sensory Bag

When I put my hand in the sensory bag, I felt something spiky because it was sharp.  When I put my hand in the sensory bag, I felt something furry because it had small, smooth spikes.  Inside the sensory bag, I felt something rough because it felt like it had dirt on it. Inside the sensory bag, I felt something warm because it had fur on it.  Inside the sensory bag, I felt something cold.

Paea's Description

Inside the Sensory Bag

When I put my hand in the sensory bag, I felt something smooth because I felt the fluff.  It was hard because I couldn't bend it.  It was warm because of the fluff.  It was ticklish because of the spiky things on it.  It felt like a flower because it was curvy and fluffy.  It was pointy because it felt like a stick because at the bottom, there was a long stick.

Pearl's Description

Inside the Sensory Bag

When I put my hand in the sensory bag, I felt something hard.  It was also spiky, big and heavy.  It felt like a toy spider.  It felt like it had wings, legs and fur.  The legs felt pointy because my hand kept getting poked.  I think it felt like these because it felt like a spider.

This was what was inside the sensory bag.  It is a fake succulent plant.

Traffic Lights Art

Red means Stop
Orange means Slow down
Green mean Go

We used red, orange and green paper to make our traffic lights.  We know what these colours on the traffic lights mean.

We worked in pairs to make our traffic lights.

We also read a poem about the traffic lights.

Traffic Lights

Twinkle, twinkle traffic light,
on the corners shining bright.
Red means STOP and green means GO.
Orange means go very SLOW.
Twinkle, twinkle traffic light,
on the corners shining bright.

Day 3 of Road Safety

Today was the day we got to practise what we had learned from Constable Taina.  She took us for a hikoi so we could cross the road, look out for traffic and notice the sneaky driveways.

It was a bit challenging crossing the road by ourselves with the traffic coming down the road.  There were cars parked on the road which made it even harder for us to look out for the traffic.

We also noticed the zebra crossing on the road at the pedestrian crossing with the orange signs.

Road Safety Prize Winners

As part of the Road Safety week, our class had been given 2 water bottles and 5 bags.  The students were put in a draw and the winners got to select their own prizes.

Road Safety Week Day 2

Sneaky Driveways, Car Parks, Car seats and Seatbelts

Constable Taina explained to us that sneaky driveways are driveways where we can't see up the driveway.  This could be because of the high solid fence or hedges.  If we are walking along the footpath, she told us to slow down and look at the driveway for cars that might be reversing.

Car parks are another dangerous place with cars and people walking, sharing the car park.  She told us to watch out for cars that might be reversing or driving in the car park.  We have to look for the white lights at the back of the car to check if it is reversing.  We should only walk past a reversing car if the driver says so.

To keep safe in the car, we should always put our seatbelts on and make it 'click'.  The law says that children who are 7 years old or younger should always sit in a car seat.

Belts On,
Phones Off,
Make it a habit.

Road Safety Week with Constable Taina

Day 1

Constable Taina visited our class this week to teach us about road safety.

She taught us some road rules:

-we should be over 8 years old to cross the road by ourselves.
-the road is for the traffic and the footpath is for the pedstrians
-if we are walking on the footpath, we should keep our eyes to the front, keep our hand to ourselves and walk on the footpath close to the houses.
-we should never play on the road.

We then went to the netball court to practise our walking.  We had to look right first then left then right again and we also had to listen for the traffic before stepping out.

She also told us to stay away from the kerb.

ANZAC Service

Our ANZAC service at school was to remember all the service people who went to war for us.

It was a very warm and moving ceremony and the lady from the RSA appreciated the writings and poems we had written.

Malachi carried the flag for us while Mya carried the cross.  Saphire and Mele placed our wreath while Kiana read our class poem.

Room 6

Our poem is about the Anzacs who went to Gallipoli in Turkey.

Gallipoli

Gallipoli is where the ANZACs went
Anzac Cove is the place they landed
Last Post is what they heard at the end of the day
Lots of soldiers went to battle
In the trenches, they kept safe
Poppies grew in the fields where they fell
On ANZAC day, we remember them
Lest We Forget
Injury and death they suffered to bring us peace

We Will Remember Them

Raindrops

Our black clouds with raindrops; we drew the raindrops and black clouds with crayons then used the dye to create the dark sky.

Water Experiments with Sally from Watercare

Water is one of the most precious resources on earth and we have been learning about water so Sally, from Watercare came to visit us on Thursday and share some experiments with water.

She talked about different states of water- solid, liquid, gas.  Ice is solid because it doesn't change shape, water is liquid because it can change shape and moves freely while steam is gas and is free to move around in the air.  We pretended we were water molecules in different states.

In our first experiment, we had to put our finger a jar of water.  Our finger looked bigger in the water than out of the water. Sally told us that this is called 'refraction'.  Refraction is the change in direction of a wave caused by the change in the wave's speed, in this case water.

In our next experiment we wrote 'x' on a piece of paper and put it under a jar full of water.  When we looked at the jar from the side, 'x' had 'disappeared' like magic.  Water can play a lot of trick on us!
Saphire looking for her 'x'.

Another experiment involved some pepper.  Sally sprinkled some pepper on the water and she told us that water can have 'skin' on top.  The pepper floated on the top then she added some soap.  The soap was heavier so it sank to the bottom creating a white surface.  Sally then added some water and as if by magic, the 'hole' was filled up.

We also had a boat race with soap chasing the boat.

We had a challenge too!  Our challenge was to add as many popping corn as we could to a jar full of water and count each time we put a corn in.  We were able to put 56 corn without the water spilling out!  We could see that the water was higher than the brim but it hadn't spilled, we wondered how many more could it take?

Whanau Came to Watch Our Swimming Lessons

The swimming has finished for this year and during the last week, our whanau were invited to come and watch us swim.  They were impressed to see how much we had improved with our swimming.

'Snow Flakes'

This term our art focus has been on painting and different kinds painting techniques and since we had been learning about Seasons, we decided to paint some snow flakes.

We painted the background blue and then used the bottom part of the soda bottle to 'stamp' snowflakes.  We added some glitter to give sparkle.

Fruit in Autumn

There are avocado and peach trees in our neighbours backyard, so we went to investigate what was happening with those trees.  We noticed that they are laden with fruit and some of the peaches are turning yellow, so they will be ready to harvest in autumn.

The investigators

We wonder if the peaches are going to be juicy and if the avocado will taste delicious in our sandwiches!

Painting with Nature

There so many different tools to use when painting and on Friday we went to look for different natural materials we could use.  Some materials we had found were not suitable for painting like egg shells but we found pine cones, leaves, pine needles, grass and feathers which seemed more suitable.  We brought them back to class and used them to paint.  The shapes and patterns were amazing while some were a bit tricky to use. It was different but fun at the same time.  We didn't know we could paint with natural materials too!

IPad Training

What our exciting day it was on Thursday when we finally started to work on our IPads.  Mrs Lal came and took our first lesson and showed us how to take photos and write something about it.

We have to be so careful when walking with our IPads and use our 'Kawa of Care' at all times.

We wonder what we will learn next?

Kawa Of Care for our Ipads
-hold your Ipad with both hands
-keep the flap closed when you are not using it
-use the flap to cover the screen
-close the flap to save battery

Ipad is for fun learning!

Swimming is Fun

We are so lucky to have a pool to learn to swim and cool off in this hot weather.  We are even luckier to have the swimming tutors to teach us how to swim.  While most of could float on our back and front and glide, now we are learning to use our arms as well.  We learn something new everyday!!

Look at Our Self Portraits

To make our self portraits, we had to first draw our face and colour it in.  Then we traced around our hand and coloured it in as well.  Our background is of marble painting, we rolled the marbles with paint on a piece of paper. Once it was dry, we glued our pictures on it.

Can you guess who is who?

Meet the New Room 6 Students

Welcome to our blog for 2018!  We are going to be learning and sharing a lot of things on our blog so keep visiting us to see what we are doing in our class this year.
