The Making of The Rat

We have mice and rats in our environment so we decided to make a rat as part of the Te Oro expo.  First we made a frame out of chicken wire.  Then we covered it with newspaper and glue and left it to dry.  We did this for a few weeks.  We then used hot glue guns to glue strips of fur like fabric.  Lastly we added the nose, the ears, the mouth, the teeth and the paws.

We think we are very lucky not to have a rat of this size in the world!!

Measurement in Maths

We had a challenging tasks of measuring different things with our partner.  It was hard to measure the doorway because our hands moved when we tried to compare with the desks. We decided it would be much easier to measure if we all had the same thing to measure with, like a ruler!!

Remembering the ANZACs

For the last 2 weeks we have been learning about the ANZAC's.  We have learned about the symbols, why we should remember them and some events that had happened during the wars.

Can you guess which pests these are?

Te Oro Expo- Pests: Who needs them?

We had a great day at Te Oro expo on Wednesday.  The senior students were ready to answer all the questions and the 'x-ray' machine was set up to detect any pests.

Our school was so proud of all our students- the presenters, the performers, the audience and all the students who were part of this expo.

Acrostic Poems

Our focus has been pests and as part of that we have been writing about pests too.  We wrote some acrostic poems about flies and mosquitoes.  Acrostic poems are poems where a word in used to write the poem, here we had chosen 'Flies' and 'Mosquitoes'.

The wasp art work was by Ariel and had bubble wrap on top, like the nest.

Display for Te Oro

As part of our Te Oro display, we did research on pests that can be found in our community such as cockroaches, snails, slugs, rats, wasps.  We collected the information on their diet, their description, habitats, how to get rid of them and how to prevent them. We then displayed our findings in inform of reports and drew pictures of these pests to go with our displays.

A Visit from Robert Rakete

We are so lucky at our school, not only do we get free reading books, we also get visits from famous people.

This week our famous visitor was Robert Rakete.  He was our Duffy role model and he told us about the importance of reading and how much he enjoyed reading when he was little. His favourite book was Asterix and Obelix which he still likes to read!!

Shelan was so lucky to receive her Duffy book from him.
