'Snow Flakes'

This term our art focus has been on painting and different kinds painting techniques and since we had been learning about Seasons, we decided to paint some snow flakes.

We painted the background blue and then used the bottom part of the soda bottle to 'stamp' snowflakes.  We added some glitter to give sparkle.

Painting with Nature

There so many different tools to use when painting and on Friday we went to look for different natural materials we could use.  Some materials we had found were not suitable for painting like egg shells but we found pine cones, leaves, pine needles, grass and feathers which seemed more suitable.  We brought them back to class and used them to paint.  The shapes and patterns were amazing while some were a bit tricky to use. It was different but fun at the same time.  We didn't know we could paint with natural materials too!

Look at Our Self Portraits

To make our self portraits, we had to first draw our face and colour it in.  Then we traced around our hand and coloured it in as well.  Our background is of marble painting, we rolled the marbles with paint on a piece of paper. Once it was dry, we glued our pictures on it.

Can you guess who is who?

Human Anatomy

This term we are learning about human anatomy.  We are really enjoying learning about our organs and how they work and for art we decided to make a skeleton using straws.
We worked in teams.

Our finished skeletons.

Jovi Modelling Clay

Our challenge was to make 3D objects using jovi modelling clay.  These are some of the models we made.

We had some Room 9 students working with us too,

Room 6 can sew

What a challenge sewing has been for us!!!  We had to learn to thread, knot and make stitches, all in one lesson but we are quick learners and were able to learn to sew easily.

We are learning to stitch a koru as part of our Kiwiana topic and we have almost finished it.  We have learned that with sewing, we make a lot of mistakes but we are teaching each other.  We enjoy sitting in groups and working together.

Daffodil Day

This year the Daffodil Day was on the same day as our zoo trip so Mrs Vickers let us wear our daffodils for the whole week.  A lot of us donated towards the cancer society by giving a gold coin donation in exchange for a daffodil.

We also made some daffodils for our art.  We had to choose one daffodil for Mrs Vickers.  It was a very hard choice as we all had made great daffodils but Christina had the best daffodil so we sent her one to Mrs Vickers.

Our Art Challenge -Weaving

Our challenge for the art has been to draw a Samoan or Tongan pattern, colour it and then weave through it.  The weaving has been a challenge as we have to remember to go under then over through the slits.  We have been helping each other to create our patterns.

The Finished Leis

We have finally finished our leis and they look incredible.  We had to work so carefully with the crepe paper and the needle but with teamwork, we made something we are very proud to wear.

Can you see all the different patterns we tried to create?

Making Leis

It takes a lot of patience and skill to make leis.  First we had to thread the needle with the string then thread the crepe paper through.  We worked in pairs and tried to make patterns. The crepe paper is really soft so we had to be very careful.

We are still working on our leis. We wonder how long it will take us?

The Making of The Rat

We have mice and rats in our environment so we decided to make a rat as part of the Te Oro expo.  First we made a frame out of chicken wire.  Then we covered it with newspaper and glue and left it to dry.  We did this for a few weeks.  We then used hot glue guns to glue strips of fur like fabric.  Lastly we added the nose, the ears, the mouth, the teeth and the paws.

We think we are very lucky not to have a rat of this size in the world!!

Pests Silhouette

Pest Art

Fly Swat Art

As part of our inquiry learning, we have been learning about pests in our environment. Flies are pesky pests and we can use fly swats to get rid of them so we decided to use the fly swat and paint to create our artwork. It was fun 'smacking' the paint and watch it splatter across the paper.

Painting With Circles

For this art, we had to dip the containers with different paint and use the brush to paint the circles using circular movements.
We had to really concentrate to make sure the paint stayed within the circles.

Scatter Painitng

This week our challenge was to do a self-portrait.  First, we had to draw the outline of our head and shoulder.  Then we used a vivid to go over the pencil line.  We took our portraits outside and used brushes to scatter the paint on it.  It was messy but fun and we had to be careful not to paint each other too!!

The final portraits!

Daffodil Day

We had a challenge this week to create a daffodil with a stalk so it could be displayed in a vase.  We had to think fast and hard and this is what we created.

Sebastian adding the final touches to his daffodil with support from Tukotahi and Sunipa.

We have been busy painting

We are learning different techniques of painting so we brought out the paintbrushes, marbles, bubble wrap and our hands!

Marble Painting: We rolled marbles on blobs of paint, it was s much fun racing the marbles and we created beautiful artwork as a result.

Our self portraits: We made hand prints and then painted our bodies.

For this art work, we had to blend the paints first to make the background.  We then used bubble wrap to make patterns on our butterfly.

Our daffodils

Our daffodils using crayon and dye

In room 6 we worked very hard with our daffodils.  We practised first and made sure we had only six petals!  We looked at the real daffodils and the photos for inspiration.
