How to Bend Water?

How can we bend water without using magic?  In room 6, we did it, we bent running water!

First, we blew up a balloon and put it very close to the running water but nothing happened!  Then the magic started to happen ( not really a magic),when we rubbed the balloon on our hair which made it static!  It raised our hair and and stuck to Juniah's hair!  We then took our charged balloon back to the running water, the water bent, just like magic!

Show and Tell

As part of our oral language, we have been bringing something to talk about or have thought of an interesting topic we could speak on.

We have seen fluffy toys, dolls, snow globes and heard about birthday parties.  The audience had to listen carefully to the speakers so they could ask questions.

Corn Flour Gloop

Did you know that corn flour gloop looks hard but when you pick it up, it seems to 'melt' and drips from your fingers.  We found that out during this science experiment.  We tried to form it into a ball and as soon as we stopped rolling, it went flat and started to drip!

Junior Speech Finals

What a great final we have had!  The competition was tough and the topics were amazing.  

Our 3 finalists were Amera, Willie and Joseph.  They spoke confidently, remembered all their speech and looked at the audience.

The winner of the Junior Speech Finals was Joseph and he received a trophy to take home.

Congratulations to all the students for standing up in front of a big audience and speaking confidently!

Poetry Recital

The challenge for us was to learn poems that were long and had interesting words.  We were very good at learning these poems and had actions to match the words too.

The three finalists from our class were Solomon, Amera and Shelan.  Congratulations on awesome recitals.

Our Show and Tell Continues

This week it was Kyronae, Ocean and Charle's turn to show and tell.  It always interesting to hear what our class mates say and we get to ask them questions too.

Show and Tell

It was Christina and Joseph's turn to bring something to share with the class.  Christina brought her Tongan fan that her grandmother had given her and Joseph brought a magnifying glass.  We were really excited to look through the magnifying glass as everything seemed so close and big.

Bubble Fun

It is very tricky to blow bubbles!  We mixed dishwashing liquid with some water, dipped our hands in it, made foam by rubbing our hands together and gently blew it with our hands parted.  Some of us blew really big bubbles.  It was a lot of fun and we ended up with very clean hands too!! 

Story Telling

We have been using the pictures from multi lingual books to make up stories as part of our oral language.  Our stories have characters, setting, problems and solutions with more detail now.

Telling Stories

As part of our oral language, we decided to make up stories using books in other languages and share it with the class. We worked in groups of 4 and had to think of our characters, setting, problems and solutions.

There were stories about monsters, grandma's and granddaughters and about going to the marae.  

Gravity Free Water Science Experiment

What is gravity free water?

Gravity free water when the water in a jar is turned upside down but it does not flow out even though there's no lid to hold it in.

How does it happen?

Well, we filled a jar with water and put a cardboard on top.  We then turned it upside down and surprisingly the water stayed in the jar.  

With no air inside the glass, the air pressure from outside the glass was greater than the pressure of the water inside the glass. The extra air pressure managed to hold the cardboard in place, keeping us dry and the water where it should be, inside the glass.  Amazing!!

Will it Sink or Float?

As part of our science experiment, we decided to test if the things we had selected would sink or float in the water.  First, we made predictions and then we tested them.

This table shows what we predicted and what actually happened. The most tricky ones to predict were the limestone and the stick.
